How many Kenyans does it take to raise a water tank?

Ten, as it turns out, as long as they’re “well-fed men” (the plumber’s words, not mine!).  With no cranes available in this part of Kenya, water tanks are raised by ropes and manpower.

When they started having difficulty with the weight I wanted nothing more than to assist.  But, as it turns out, I couldn’t help even if I wanted to.  One of the peculiarities of the culture that I have had to adapt to.  Born into a stanch feminist family, I will admit that it’s very difficult sometimes not to drop what I’m doing and grab a rope, but I have been informed that it is extremely embarrassing and disruptive for the men.

Sigh.

Back to the tank.  After three days of waiting on the bank and administration officials to clear the money, we finally got the tank on Saturday and raised it onto the tower Sunday morning!

Given that the first attempt resulted in a thoroughly broken tank and a ladder fatality, I was quite nervous, especially when I saw the size of the tank versus the tower!!  But after two hours of tying, maneuvering and pulling, the ten well-fed Kenyan men succeeded!

SUCCESS!!

SUCCESS!!

Next up, kiosk construction!
